Fatigue Management
Fatigue is more than simply feeling tired or drowsy. It is caused by prolonged periods of physical and/or mental exertion without enough time to rest and recover; this can further increase the risk of incidents because of the lack of alertness to make good decisions or react to signals.
Fatigue management is a critical matter to MTAW operating in the transportation industry and to the employees in the workplace, as the health and safety of all personal is an upmost priority.
To ensure drivers are complying with the fatigue management requirements MTAW have placed a set of procedures that drivers must fulfil whilst management can oversee and check that these guidelines are met at all intervals. These include:
- Log Book Checks to ensure drivers are taking the correct amount of rest whilst on the roads
- Reviews of drivers completed on a weekly basis
- Appropriate documentation and record keeping practices
- Driver planners and trip scheduling
- Regular assessments of drivers
- Require drivers to present themselves in a fit state for duty at all times including not being impaired by alcohol or drug use
- Fatigue management plan that covers every commercial vehicle and driver
At MTAW we provide drivers with various amounts of support to sustain fit and health drivers to ensure all employees are safe, MTAW have incorporated strategies to endorse this by:
- Maintaining open lines of communication between management and drivers
- MTAW provide vehicle drivers with information and assistance to promote management of their health
- Provide appropriate employee assistance programs where necessary and practicable
- Continuous training and education for drivers in fatigue management
